Shoreline Protection, Ada Foah, Ghana
Products:ACETube® - hydraulic structures
Application: Revetments
-
Background
-
Ada Foah is a town on the southeast coast of Ghana, where the Volta River meets the Atlantic Ocean. It's known for palm-lined beaches and estuary islands. The Shoreline Protection Project in ADA Ghana will introduce breakwater to prevent shoreline erosion. Previous use of non-woven bags for the shoreline protection has proven futile with persistence erosion occurrence due to the bags are not uniformly stacked.

Problem / Task
-
They think it is dues to newly built groynes built on the island in front of theirs, while the island in front of theirs has been reclaiming theirs has been eroding.
Currently the client and his neighbor have been having serious erosion on their beach front properties. It had already eating up about 50meters of the beach and also destroyed the huts next to the client property. To curtail the loss sand, geotextile tubes have been stacked along the shoreline in an effort to protect the shoreline. And it can cover the protective layer above the geotextile tubes to extend the service life. -
Solution/ Design & Construction
-
The application of ACETube® is an easy and cost-effective way to prevent shoreline erosion and protect coastal infrastructure with the filling material obtained from dredging of river channels, thus reducing the possibility of flooding. ACETubes are derived from geotextiles and can also be applied in coastal protection, groins, land reclamation work. By filling the geotextile tubes with in-situ sand and water, the water permeates from the tube leaving the sand in the tube, creating a steady and protective barrier on shorelines for protection. Not only does it have sand regulatory effect but it is also effective in stabilizing the sand against extreme meteorological events, as well as preventing it from water wash.
-
Result
-
The whole structure provides protection for the shoreline from continuous attack by the waves and also can restore the sand dune. The high permeability of ACETube® can improve construction efficiency and laying of additional protective layer on the surface enhances the ability of the structure to resist the attack of waves.
Revetments
Revetment structures are built to protect slopes, banks or cliffs against erosion. Geosynthetics have multifunctional purposes in coastal revetment construction...
