Background

After the merger of Kaohsiung counties and cities in 2010, various project and facilities were proposed to be added year by year amongst them was "Moon World Landscape Park". This was a restoration project in the aftermath of typhoon Meranti and included an observation platform with wooden access staircase ladder and an ecological lake pavilion.

Problem / Task

Typhoon Meranti in September 2016 was characterized by intense rainfall along the southern part of Taiwan. This led to significant ground saturated which combined with porewater pressure build up induce slope failure by sliding. This was further magnified by surface erosion along failed surface resulting in the formation of deep gullies in multiple areas.

Solution/ Design & Construction

RC slab supported by 6m pile at 1m centers provided the stable base at the lower part of the slope. The rest of the slope was restored by constructing reinforced earth structure (RES) with the used of ACEGrid® to reinforce the soil and increasing its shear strength, ACESandbag™ EC for wrapped around facing and vegetation propagation, ACETex® and ACEDrain™ for subsurface drainage to reduce porewater pressure. Other materials used includes ACE Gabions™, ACEPin™ T. The overall construction re-uses the salvage soil from failed slope for quick and rapid construction progress.

Cognizant of the environment, it was imperative to restore the area to its original state of lust vegetation for a more natural scenery. Therefore, with the combination of green engineering and green index approach, the restoration process successful completed with less environmental impact to the river ecology.
