Typical rivers in Taiwan are short, with steep slopes and swift currents. During the rainy seasons in spring and summer, the excess rainfall often not only causes damages to the riverbanks, but also entails serious flooding disasters. Such conditions have truly endangered the safety of life and property of local residents.

The project reported herein is located near Changhong Bridge in Fengyuan County, Taichung, Taiwan. Precast ecological concrete blocks and partition beams were used to improve the revetment and prevent the occurrence of floods, finally rendering the environment more natural.

Since the damaged areas are more serious and endanger the people’s lives, a design was adopted to build a revetment of 161.6 m, with 11 partition beams, 8 solid bed workers and one ramp. There is a hollow portion inside each precast ecological concrete block. The hollow portion above the water level can provide space for plants, while the part below the water provides a habitat space for fish.

The advantage of this design not only has the effect of slowing the flow rate, but also makes for a natural landscape and environment integration. The precast ecological concrete blocks were made in the factory; this improves the quality and stability of the product and reduces the pollution during transport.
