Background
-
In Tainan, due to the intrinsic topography and hydrology changes, the retaining wall is no longer strong enough to protect the channel from erosion.
The changing of intrinsic topography and hydrology shortened the time of rain concentration and increased the surface runoff, and it also raised the load of draining capacity and made the drainage impaired. In order to improve the capacity of discharge in this case, the drainage channel was broadened, and built a vertical concrete retaining wall next to the channel.

Unfortunately, the retaining wall made the flow rate even faster than prior section and scoured the unprotected channel; what’s worse, it led to the erosion of the retaining wall and its bottom.Therefore, in view of above problems caused by retaining wall, a reliable solution was required to conduct in urgent.

Solution/ Design & Construction

In order to solve the problem of carrying away the ooze at the bottom of channel, the design was to apply ACEFormer™ geotextile mattresses to the channel bed. ACEFormer™ were formed as lattice structure, and the single-layer fabric was surrounded by double-layer fabric lattice which could be filled with cement mortar. Since the ACEFormer™ used in this field and the shape is solid lattice, it couldobviously increase the Manning rough coefficient of the channel bed and decrease the velocity of flow. Especially in the area where the channel was curved, ACEFormer™ geotextile mattresses could reduce the damage probability caused by the swift current.
Moreover, increasing service life of the channel is another benefit of ACEFormer™.

Result

Currently, the channel is still in a good condition even after many typhoons attacked.It is proven that ACEFormer™ geotextile mattresses have high durability and cost-effective value to apply to channel protection projects.
